The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has proclaimed the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day the “100 Deadliest Days.” During this time period teenage crashes increase significantly! In fact more than 5000 traffic fatalities have been attributed to teenage drivers during this dangerous three month period. That is why I have timed the release of my new book “Save Your Teenage Driver’s Life”🙁 Important Strategies to Teach a New Driver Now!) to coincide with these “100 Deadliest Days.”
The book is written in response to many of the graphic statistics that continue to dominate the media concerning teens and driving. AAA goes on to say that “60% of these crashes involve distractions behind the wheel.” Such things as phone calls, texting and taking eyes off the road are all to common occurrences with teenage drivers. Matter of fact, one in three new drivers will be involved in a car accident or receive a ticket within their first year of driving. These statistics will only to continue to rise as the number of young drivers increase on our roads during the summer months.
Driver Education Can Help!
Driver education programs and private driving schools are great for getting teens started on the basic skills on how to drive. Unfortunately, they do not provide a young driver with the necessary experience required to navigate our nation’s complicated highway transportation system. New drivers need to get vital help and in-car practice from the adults around them. The skill of driving a 2000 pound vehicle at high speeds requires professional and appropriate driver education training. Getting enough practice time in a variety of different driving settings is essential to every new driver.
Parents as Driver Education Partners
Parents need to stay actively involved in the driver education training of their sons and daughters. After all, a tremendous amount of time and an awful lot of money is spent on youth sport activities as compared to the amount of time and money spent on an activity that could “Save Your Teenagers Life.”
Parents should continue to stay updated on current defensive driving techniques as well as teach these techniques to their new drivers. Role modeling is also extremely important. Teens are continuously watching the adults driving behavior whether they realize it or not. Buckling seat belts, two hands on the wheel and zero tolerance for mobile devices are just a few things that should be modeled at all times when behind the wheel.
